Independence, choice and control

People old us they felt listened to and involved in their care. One person told us, ‘’I can make suggestions. We have discussions, I can tell them what needs doing, and when it should be done.’’ Another person said, ‘’The care is being provided in a way I want it to be provided.’’

Staff knew people well and told us how important it was to ensure people remained independent for as long as possible. Comments included, ‘’By helping an individual stay independent helps them to be able to do things when people are not around. The more they can do for themselves the better and this should be encouraged. It also can be good for their physical and mental health’’ , ‘’Helping people maintain their independence is crucial for their dignity, self-esteem, and quality of life. For example, we encourage clients to participate in their daily activities, such as cooking or managing personal hygiene, with appropriate support and guidance’’ and, ''Maintaining independence is crucial for clients' dignity and mental well-being. For example, I encourage clients to participate in daily activities such as choosing their clothes or assisting with meal preparation, as much as they are able.''

People’s preferences, including communication, were detailed in their care plans. People’s care needs were clearly described and accessible to staff. Care plans were reviewed regularly to ensure people’s goals and outcomes were reviewed. Where there had been a change in need, care plans had been updated. The electronic care planning system in place allowed for changes to be made easily.
