Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Most people and their families felt their needs were met effectively and in a timely way. However, one person and one relative told us call bells were sometimes turned off and that staff do not then return promptly. We spoke with the manager about this, who explained how call bells are sometimes silenced if staff are busy, however these still alert staff to attend to the person. The manager also confirmed how they had oversight of this, by monitoring call bell response times and completing regular observations of staff.

The manager explained how they ensured people’s needs were met in a timely manner. They told us they had a system where they could access call bell systems, explaining: “Staff are aware they have 3-5 minutes to answer a call bell, and this will then go into assisted standby and will then respond to this once they are available.” The manager explained that staff occasionally silence alarms if they are busy supporting another person but will always return to the person requiring support and the manager confirmed how they had oversight of this.

We observed staff were meeting people’s needs effectively and in a timely manner. Staff supported people with regular drinks and activities.
