Our view of the service

Date of assessment from 26 September 2024. Layden Court Care Home provides nursing and personal care for up to 92 older people, including people living with dementia. At the time of the assessment site visit, 47 people were using the service. Layden Court was last rated Inadequate overall (published 2 March 2024). We undertook this assessment to follow up on the previous enforcement action we had taken against the service. At the last inspection we were concerned about people’s safety, relating to safeguarding and managing risks, medicines, staffing, and ineffective governance. During this assessment, we found improvements had been made, and the service was making good progress in rectifying the concerns found at our last inspection. At this assessment we have removed breaches of regulation in relation to, safeguarding and managing risks, medicines and staffing. However, the breach in relation to governance has remained. This service has been in Special Measures since 1 February 2024. The provider demonstrated improvements that have been made. The service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, this service is no longer in Special Measures. There were no undue restrictions on people receiving visits and we saw people’s visitors coming and going throughout the day of our assessment visit. Processes were in place to assess people’s capacity to make decisions about their care, in line with The Mental Capacity Act 2005. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People's experience of this service

People trusted the staff and felt safe receiving care from them. For instance, one person said, “I feel safe, I love it here, I picked it. The staff are right good, they give you a lot of tips.” Relative’s feedback included,” [My family member] is safe here’”, “The best thing is the safety” and “[My family member] is not so good on the legs, is a falls risk/ [The service] has an alert mat so they know when [person] is out of bed”. People and their relatives told us there had been improvements and the management team were supportive and approachable. “It is generally better than before. There have been a lot of changes in managers, also there are new carers.” People were confident to speak with staff or the registered manager if they had any concerns. There was a positive culture in the home and a caring atmosphere. There were mixed views about staffing levels, although most people and relatives felt there were enough staff to meet people’s needs. Overall, people felt well supported with their medicines and most relatives said the home was kept clean, safe and comfortable. People’s feedback indicated there were systems in place to make sure people were safely admitted to the service. One person had recently moved in. They said, “It’s a matter of [staff] getting to know me better. We don’t fall out. They listen to me and if I am fed up they have a chat with me and they respect how I like things done.” People told us there a variety of activities on offer, both on groups and on an individual basis, to help keep them active in mind and body. A relative said, “The activities coordinator is very good and since she has been here there is more stuff going on.”
