Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us staff promoted independence and supported them to have choice and control in their lives. We saw examples of of where people were supported to spend their days doing activities and social events that matched their desired outcomes.

Staff knew what was important to people and ensured peoples confidentiality and privacy were respected and their independence was promoted. People were offered a choice of meals from a menu which people were encouraged to help develop. Staff advised us that if people did not like the choices available an alternative would be provided. One staff member told us “We have a menu rota where we get everybody involved. People will always change their minds and if they do, then we will make them something else”.

People were clearly supported to maximise their independence as much as possible. The levels of people’s abilities to carryout day to day tasks such as shopping and socialising was high. By noon, the majority of people had left to do either day to day tasks or planned socialising and activities. People were leading active lives and encouraged to maintain relationships.

People were valued and placed at the centre of the service. Staff promoted their privacy and dignity, enabling them to make choices and have as much control and independence as possible. The systems the provider had in place supported this.
