Caring
People told us they were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. They told us they were treated as individuals and were supported to make their own decisions and choices. Staff gave examples of how they promoted people’s independence.

Independence, choice and control
People told us they were treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. They told us they were treated as individuals and were supported to make their own decisions and choices. People told us staff knew them well and how they liked to be supported. One relative told us, “They [staff] act on what I say.” People told us they were encouraged to be as independent as possible. One person told us, “They just leave me to let me get on. If I can’t manage they are just standing in the hall. I just need to say, ‘I need your help’ and they are there in an instant…I want to do what I want to do on my own. If I can’t, I’ve only got to call them, and they are there.”
Staff gave examples of how they promoted people’s independence and respected people’s choices. One staff member told us, “As carer's we always try for them to live independently and make decisions and choices, this is their care, and they know what they want.”
People’s care plans and risk assessments included what people could do for themselves. People and their relatives were involved in reviewing and making decisions about their care. The management team were in the process of reviewing all care plans at the time of the assessment, to make these more person centered, with an increased level of detail.
