Updated 11 February 2025

Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Staff spoke about people warmly and positively, and there was an emphasis on staff working with people to build relationships of trust. A staff member told us, “[Person] is amazing to be with, they are such a happy guy. I have such a good relationship with [person].” One relative said, “We know [person] enjoys being there (at Mirabeau). [Person] was here at Christmas and demanded to get back in time for Boxing Day!”. Another person’s relative told us, “If we had won the lottery we couldn’t have found [person] a better place.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. A staff member told us, “Each person has their own personality, and they all have certain things that might make them smile. For example, 1 person likes to mess around with pranks so going along with a joke makes [person] laugh and think they’ve done the joke to you.” Another staff member said, “One of our guys loves darts and is so happy with themselves for achieving a bullseye. Another [person] has a job once a week, it’s lovely seeing [person] take pride in their work as it means so much to them.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. A professional who worked with the service told us, “The individuals all access the community and use the local services, shops, leisure centres, including local buses and trains. They all have the opportunities to go on holiday each year and doing activities they want to do. All the care and support is personalised to each individual and they are all treated with dignity and respect by all the staff at the home.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. A person’s relative told us, “[Person] has a routine in place. When there is an occasion of a change, it’s rearranged so it has as little impact (on the person’s wellbeing) as possible.” Staff we spoke with could clearly tell us about people and what might trigger upset or anxiety. For example, 1 staff member told us, “[Person] doesn’t like loud noises, so we do the fire checks when [person] is out so it’s not upsetting for them. Or we stand with [person] and tell them when it is going to happen and reassure them, so [person] knows about what to expect.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Support measures were in place to allow staff to de-brief, and to raise any queries or concerns. A staff member told us, “[Registered Manager] is very welcoming regardless of how busy her day might be, she always finds time to be a listening ear giving advice, support and encouragement.” Measures were in place to support with health needs and flexible working.
