Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

Some people were not encouraged to make individual choice about their daily living. There was a planned menu that ran for a month and most people were expected eat the same meal as others at the same time. One professional told us they had observed a reluctance on the part of staff to offer choices to people about what they ate where and when. This meant people were not given informed choices and is not in line with Right Support Right Care Right Culture. One person told us they were involved in their care planning. We saw they had signed their plans and risk assessments. They could leave the house independently and went out to work at a part time job.

The registered manager and staff told us they felt people enjoyed having a planned menu and that people could chose alternatives if they wanted. However we did not see any engagement with people about meal choices during the assessment.

The provider had paperwork systems in place to record people's preferences and this was being transferred to an electronic system. However the paperwork was not always comprehensive, in date or accessible which meant the provider could not be assured people knew their rights in relation to their care and treatment.
