Our view of the service

Date of assessment 24 April to 16 May 2024 Deer park is a residential care home providing personal care to adults, some who require support with mental health conditions. We completed this assessment due to concerns about the management of risk especially when people express their emotions by non-verbal actions. We assessed a total of 5 quality statements from safe and well led key questions and found some areas of concern as well as good practice. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the key ratings from the last inspection. Though the assessment of these 5 quality statements indicated areas of good practice since the last inspection, our overall rating remains requires improvement. There continued to be limited guidance for staff to support people when they were distressed or anxious. When incidents happened, these had been recorded, but any learning had not been used to update people’s care plans. The management had not put action plans in place when they identified where there were shortfalls to show how they had made improvements. There were enough staff to meet people’s needs and they had received training appropriate to their roles. Staff knew people well including their choices and preferences, people were asked their opinions about the service and the changes they wanted.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt safe living at the service. They told us they helped staff in the kitchen and were supported to go out when they wanted to. People were supported to be as independent as possible keeping their rooms tidy. Relatives told us staff responded to people’s needs and supported them in the way they preferred. However, there had been occasions before our assessment, when people had been placed at risk of harm by the actions of others when they were distressed or anxious.
