Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

The 3 patients we spoke with felt they were treated fairly and equally and the 3 carers we spoke confirmed that they were actively involved with planning care for their relative. No concerns were raised regarding discrimination and staff made every effort to ensure reasonable adjustments were in place to support equity in experience and outcomes. Patients and their carers felt empowered through the monthly community forums.

Staff were 93% compliant in mandatory equality and diversity training which was refreshed annually. The provider ensured pocket guides regarding protected characteristics were available to staff. The 6 staff we spoke with were alert to inequality, they gave examples of when they had faced barriers in getting patients with dementia equal access to physical health services and advocated on their behalf. Patients had access to individual time with a named nurse and records we looked at confirmed this. The provider had different modes of feedback in place and tailored the care, support and treatment in response to this feedback. The service also worked alongside an assistive technology team who assessed people for and provided specialised communication aids in order to enhance the quality of life and independence of people. The service had links with local support and social groups to support patients with dementia and LGBT+.

Leaders told us they dealt with patient-on-patient discrimination and they monitored incidents by racial abuse, analysed and discussed incidents in regular governance meetings. The service also conducted regular patient and carer surveys where people could voice any concerns. The most recent survey was conducted in December 2023 and the service created action plans to make improvements based on this feedback. However, most feedback from people was highly positive about the staff and the care they received at the hospital.
