Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 20 June to 01 July 2024. This assessment was carried out in response to risk. We looked at 11 quality statements across the key questions of safe, effective and well-led. New Hall Hospital is operated by Ramsay Healthcare UK. It provides NHS surgery to patients from six integrated care boards and specialises in spinal surgery. Most of the hospital’s business comes from NHS patients. The service was well connected to their local community with many partnership relationships and local sponsorship. During the assessment, we spoke to enthusiastic staff and leaders who had a shared vision of what good care looked like. We found the service was performing well and delivered innovative ways of improving patient experience and outcomes, meeting the needs of their patients and those who commissioned services from them. There was an open and honest learning culture where people felt empowered to speak up and were not afraid to challenge. Staff worked with systems and processes that supported them to deliver safe care. Leaders monitored these effectively, using quality improvement tools to implement change where necessary, keeping patient safety at the heart of decision making. We observed safe levels of staffing, where staff were competent to undertake their responsibilities, supported to take ownership of their personal development. Facilities were well maintained and clean, with action plans to address areas across the hospital for continuous improvement and investment. Leaders used data and outcomes to drive change and improvement. The service had a strong governance system which enabled leaders to identify emerging trends and track performance against their goals.
