Delivering evidence-based care and treatment
People told us they were happy with the food, and they had access to food and drink when they chose. However, our observations showed people did not always receive a positive mealtime experience. For example, staff members were supporting multiple people to eat at the same time, moving from person to person instead of providing dedicated support to those who needed it. Although some people made choices regarding their fluid and nutrition, we observed two people who were not offered choice of their meals and drinks. The correct menus were not always on display to ensure people were aware of the meals available.
Staff raised concerns regarding the difficulties with the budget and ordering of food. Some staff raised concerns regarding the staffing levels and supporting people with their meals. The management team used best practice tools such as MUST tools and Waterlow to assess people’s needs.
Nutrition and hydration were not always robustly recorded. People had not always been weighed in line with their care plans. This had been identified by the quality assurance lead who assured us they had been addressing this at the time of the inspection.
