Independence, choice and control

People were supported to have choice and control. One person told us, “they did ask me if I minded a male carer, it was nice to be asked.”

Staff said they supported people to have choice and control and make decisions wherever possible. Staff comments included, “I am led by the client and their wishes, I will always ask permission and respect the clients privacy and dignity”, “I involve the client in activities and explain what is happening, [client] tells me what they want to do and I encourage them to do it” and “I support [client] to a swimming call, the client’s friends are there, a few other clients have social calls and I will take them out.”

Processes were in place to support people to make decisions about their care, treatment and wellbeing. Families were supported to be involved where possible. Staff treated people as individuals and different needs and wishes were recognised. Staff supported people to maintain friendships and networks that were important to them. Staff supported people to have access to activities and the local community to support their independence, health and wellbeing.
