People were offered a range of activities; however, more work was required to support people who preferred to stay in their bedrooms to prevent social isolation. People told us they were involved in their care planning and were always given choices in relation to how they liked to be supported. Independence, choice and control
People and relatives spoke positively about the staff. Comments included, ‘Staff treat me with dignity and respect' and "They treat people with dignity and respect because they involve them in things." Relatives commented on the high number of agency staff. They said this impacted on the quality of care as they did not know their relatives well. Relatives told us about examples where their relatives’ independence and choices were offered. Relatives and people told us there was a range of activities available for people which promoted choice and well-being. We did receive some feedback that there was less opportunities for meaningful activities where people preferred or needed to be cared for in their own rooms. Comments were diverse. For example, "The activities staff are brilliant, and the activities are very good, there’s a variety of them." and" [Name of relative] doesn’t do anything, just stays in bed staring at the ceiling. They could take [name of relative] up to the lounge or the nurse’s area."
Staff demonstrated a caring approach where people's independence, choice and control was valued and supported. They understood the importance of gaining consent and gave a range of examples of how they did this as part of their role. One staff member said, "Some people prefer a chatty approach and some a softer approach. Sometimes no matter what you do no means no." Staff described examples of how they promoted people's independence in day to day tasks. Another staff member said, "It is all about quality and enriching people's day but helping them to contribute by making choices." Staff said people had opportunities to participate in activities which promoted independence and well-being. Staff also described good relationships with the relatives and friends of people who lived at the home. Another staff member said, "Even though people cannot live independently they still have a life. They are still themselves. Living at Sunnyview does not mean people can't make their own views."
Staff offered people choices, and they were respectful of people's privacy and dignity when communicating and supporting them. We observed staff to be kind caring and gentle, and took their time when providing cares.
