Our view of the service
Layston Grove Care Home is a purpose-built residential care home providing personal and nursing care to 48 people at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to 66 people.
A new provider had registered the service in November 2022 so there was no rating in place at the time of this assessment. The last inspection of this service, under their previous registration, was rated as Good (Published 17 March 2021).
The service had systems in place to help ensure people received a good standard of care and the environment was managed safely. Where some areas needed further development, actions were implemented to make the changes. However, these needed further development to ensure actions had a completion date and a robust oversight of practice was in place.
Staff knew how to recognise and report any concerns relating to abuse. Information was displayed and safeguarding concerns were reported appropriately. Medicines management systems were in place and infection control was managed well.
The management team were present in the home providing support and guidance. They acknowledged this needed more development moving forward as this had not been as frequent with the changes being implemented from new provider. Staff received training and support.
Feedback about staff from people and relatives was they were kind and caring. People, relatives and staff had opportunities for meetings and sharing their views.
There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. There were mixed views about how busy staff were and observations about their approach at times showed some staff needed development to ensure their approach was person centred and not task led. Work was planned to make the improvements. Staff were positive about the service they provided, the management team and liked working there.
Mealtime experiences were pleasant, staff needed to ensure they were aware of time between meals to ensure people ate well and enjoyed their food.
