Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. This is the first inspection for this newly registered service. This key question has been rated Good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The person and their relative told us staff treated them with kindness, and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. The person said, “The staff are nice and friendly. All good.” Records showed the registered manager visited and the person to check whether staff interacted and supported them with kindness and compassion. A staff member said, “We give [person] as much space and privacy as they need. We close the door and curtains when supporting them and always knock first.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

Staff treated people as individuals and made sure the care, support and treatment met their needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, religious beliefs, cultural backgrounds and protected characteristics. Staff supported people to follow their cultural and religious traditions. A staff member said, “I am respectful of everyone and make sure I understand their backgrounds and religion. I give them choice and respect their decisions.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Staff promoted the person’s independence, and made sure they knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. The person and their relatives had positive experiences working with the management team and staff. They told us they were involved in decisions related to their care. The person told us their independence was encouraged by staff and they were in control of their care. A staff member said, “I support [person] to be independent and what they can for themselves but make sure they are safe. [Person] decides what they want to do and we support them, such as what they want to eat. We then go out together and buy the ingredients and cook it with them.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The person told us staff were responsive, and listened to them. The person said, “The staff are very helpful. They listen and chat to me.” Hospital passports were in place, which included important information about them that health professionals could read if, for example, they were admitted to hospital. This enabled professionals to respond to people’s immediate needs.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff said they were well supported by the managers. They told us their welfare and wellbeing was taken seriously. A staff member said, “The manager is definitely caring and supportive of us. [Registered manager] is a gentleman and makes sure we are OK and can do our jobs. We work as a team and support each other.”
