Throughout the site visit we saw kind and respectful interactions between people and the staff who supported them.

Staff felt able to raise concerns. Safeguarding was a standing agenda item at all staff meetings. This helped to raise awareness and encourage staff to share concerns.

Involving people to manage risks

Score: 3

The provider carried out practical training sessions with staff. This helped them to understand how to respond to emergency situations and risks within the home.

Risks to people were assessed to make sure they received care and support safely and were able to take part in activities of their choosing. Relatives felt that people were encouraged to be independent. One relative told us, “They encourage him to do things for himself. Totally aware of risks”

Staff were aware of risk assessments. Staff spoke passionately about how the registered manager had encouraged them to support one person to take positive risks. They said about the person, "They have come on leaps and bounds." The registered manager used scenarios to monitor staff competency in emergency situations. This helped to make sure staff knew what to do in a variety of situations.

We saw people were able to move freely around the home and garden. Staff supported people to make snacks and drinks in the kitchen in accordance with their care plans and risk assessments.

Safe and effective staffing

Score: 3

People were cared for by staff who worked as a team to meet individual needs. Relatives felt there were enough well-trained staff. One relative told us how staff had received specific training to support someone with a personal need.

There were sufficient staff to enable people to receive the care and support they needed and to take part in activities. During the site visit we saw that everyone was supported to take part in activities and go out of the house.

The provider had systems in place to make sure people had access to sufficient staff to meet their needs. Staffing levels were determined by individual needs and the activities they wished to take part in. The management team led by example. There was excellent evidence that issues arising with staff performance, which could place people at risk, were promptly and effectively addressed.

Staff were happy with the training they received and felt it gave them the skills required to meet people’s needs. The registered manager used imaginative ways to ensure training and knowledge was embedded in practice. This included white boards with questions for staff to write their responses on. These were then discussed at staff meetings.
