Independence, choice and control
People and relatives told us staff supported them to maintain their independence and have choice and control over their lives. One person told us, “What’s nice is that I have my independence which I didn’t have before.” One relative told us, “[Relative] is becoming less independent as [relative] gets older, but they still encourage [relative] to do things for herself and go places."
There was a positive culture within the service. Staff told us the vision of the service was for “People to be supported to be independent and involved in decisions” and “It’s important for people to be happy and live a life as they want to live.” Staff told us they supported people with choices and promoted their independence. One staff member told us, “We absolutely promote choice and control.” Another staff member commented, “As a team we encourage people to be involved.”
We observed staff asking people for their consent and offering people choices throughout the site visits. Staff were kind to people, treated them with respect and promoted their dignity. Some people were moving around the service independently where they could, and others were using self-propelling wheelchairs to mobilise.
Care plans included information on what people could achieve for themselves and encouraged independence. For example, 1 persons care plan detailed how the person needed to be supported to make their breakfast. There were processes in place to ensure people were involved in decisions regarding their support. This included monthly meetings looking at future goals, accomplishments, social events, and health appointments.
