The provider had systems and processes in place to understand the diverse health and care needs of people living at the service. The service was being supported by a frailty nurse from the GP surgery, who conducted regular visits as well as support by telephone. The GP carried out ward rounds by telephone. People had care plans in place. Some care plans were not as detailed as they could be to help staff understand people’s care and support needs. We observed staff communicating effectively with people.

People’s health and care needs were met. Relatives told us, “Dad needs full support and he always looks clean and presentable”; “[Person] has support from staff for all her personal care needs” and “My husband finds having personal care very difficult and can become very challenging to staff but staff are always very patient with him, he has had his haircut and his feet done since he has been here.”

Staff understood how to support people with complex needs of mental health and dementia and did so in a person-centred way. Staff supported people with things they liked to do. We observed one person laying on the floor, we discussed this with the staff and the manager, they explained the person’s previous profession. They had supported them by providing materials to help them remember their profession and carry out meaningful activity and they were laying on the floor utilising the materials.

There was clear signage to enable people to find their way around their home. Each person had a picture and short description of the things they enjoyed to guide people about what they wanted to talk about. There were activity coordinators who arranged small group and one to one activities for people. The processes to gain people’s views and experiences were in place. People, staff and residents were involved in a range of meetings to listen to their views and act on them.
