Harraton Surgery is an NHS GP practice located in Washington, Tyne and Wear. The practice has a branch site at Springwell Road Surgery in Sunderland. The deprivation score of the area in which the practice is situated is 4 (1 being most deprived, 10 being less deprived). There were approximately 3,800 people registered with the practice at the time of our assessment. The provider is registered with CQC to deliver the Regulated Activities; diagnostic and screening procedures, maternity and midwifery services; treatment of disease, disorder or injury and surgical procedures. These are delivered from both sites. The provider is a sole trader who has another GP practice contract based in the Gateshead Integrated Care Board (ICB) area. We carried out an announced focused assessment of 29 quality statements, under the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led key questions between 18 June 2024 and 20 June 2024. This assessment was carried out to assess whether there had been improvements since the last inspection of this service in June 2023, at which time the practice was rated inadequate overall and placed into special measures. At this assessment, we found that although there had been improvements since the last inspection, there were still significant concerns about governance arrangements in the practice which had an impact on safe and effective care. This was in spite of concerns being raised repeatedly about governance at the practice since 2015. As a result, we found a breach of regulations linked to good governance. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded. We are taking this service out of special measures. This recognises the improvements that have been made to the quality of care provided by this service.

People's experience of the service

Updated 24 April 2024

Patient feedback we reviewed during this assessment showed that patient experience overall was generally good. The 2023 GP patient survey showed that patient satisfaction with their overall experience of the practice was lower than average, however the practice achieved scores in line with or higher than averages in other areas. Patients said they were happy with how they could contact the practice and how their needs were met. The 2024 GP patient survey data, released in July 2024, showed a similar trend. Feedback from 3 people to CQC in the 12 months prior to the assessment expressed concerns about getting medication and with the leadership at the practice. The practice had no reviews on the I Want Great Care website. The practice told us they collected patient feedback through the friends and family test. However, during the assessment in June 2024, they were only able to provide data from the past month. 66 patients had responded to the survey. Of those responding, 79% had commented that their overall experience was very good and 12% good. Written comments left by patients showed that those who responded felt the staff at the practice were friendly and they had been treated with care.
