Our view of the service

We carried out this announced on-site assessment on 8 October 2024. We found the practice had met regulations. Patients’ care and treatment was provided in line with current guidance, and infection control procedures were in place. The practice had systems to manage risks. Overall compliance with systems were good but we found examples where systems were not always adhered to, in relation to frequency of checks on emergency equipment, reporting of findings in building health and safety checks, storing of medicines and reporting of (minor) infection control findings. Recruitment procedures reflected current legislation and there was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement. We highlighted oversight of staff continuing professional development (CPD) and clinical audit as areas for further development. Patients were treated with dignity and respect and at the time of our assessment, could access care, support and treatment when required. Backwell Dental Care Limited is in Backwell, Bristol and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children. They also provide a small amount of NHS care and treatment for adults and children. There was step free access to the practice and car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for disabled people. The practice had six treatment rooms. During the assessment we spoke with two dentists, two dental nurses, one receptionist, the practice registered manager and area compliance manager.

People's experience of this service

Two weeks before our onsite assessment, we asked the practice to encourage patients to share their views of the service. Patients had provided feedback in a number of ways to the practice and we reviewed this as part of our assessment. All feedback received provided a positive view of the dental team and care provided by the practice. Patients commented positively about the standard of care they received. Patients felt able to book appointments within an acceptable timescale for their needs. The practice shared patient feedback with the team and where suggestions had been made, appropriate action would be taken. The practice kept records of patient feedback for month-on-month and year-on-year comparison. They also monitored on-line reviews and always responded to on-line posts from patients. Feedback we reviewed gave a consistently positive view of the practice, and this was sustained over time.
