During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 21 March 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

Mydentist - King Street – Dukinfield provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available near the practice.

The dental team includes eight dentists, 10 dental nurses (three of who are trainees), one dental hygienist, two receptionists and a practice manager. The practice has five treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with three dentists, one dental nurse, the dental hygienist and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

During a routine inspection

On arrival at the practice we observed that all patients were given a pleasant welcome and spoken to with respect and politeness by all members of staff. Many of the interactions were on a first name basis and we heard staff confirming and obtaining signatures of consent to treatment (either NHS or private) and offer patients further follow up appointment dates.

We spoke with two patients during our visit. Comments included: "The service is very efficient and covers all aspects of your care and treatment. I wouldn't want to change my dentist" and "All the staff are very polite, accommodating and make sure you get a quick appointment if needed."

We looked at a sample of patient records, which were a combination of paper and electronic. Although the electronic system was not in operation at the time of our visit, we found records to be completed, and up to date. We saw that patients' medical histories and treatment plans were regularly reviewed and updated.

Records seen and staff spoken with, confirmed that all staff received appropriate support, training and supervision to enable them to carry out their job roles effectively. Training records indicated that qualified staff maintained their professional registration with the General Dental Council.

We saw that there were effective systems in place for monitoring service delivery, including an appropriate complaints procedure.

During a routine inspection

People that used the clinic told us they were happy with the care and treatment provided. They felt they were given enough information about their treatment options and the relevant fees and were able to ask all the questions they wanted to.

They found the staff to be friendly and told us that they were treated with respect and their privacy was always maintained.
