Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

We received many positive comments from people and relatives about the way staff supported them in their daily lives. One person said, “They (staff) do everything for me, they’re ever so good. The staff are brilliant.” A relative said, “Staff are easy to talk with and always ask how I am, willing to chat and good at letting me know if there are any concerns. They really are very caring. “A further relative said, “They (staff) care, they worry, they respond as though it was their own relative.”

Staff we spoke with were very positive about how caring their colleagues were towards the people they supported. One member of staff said, “ I love the unit (she worked on) and my residents. ” An agency carer we spoke with told us there were some staff who went the extra mile to support the people who lived at the service. They told us one member of staff would go and buy clothes from charity shops for people living at the service who had no family to support them. They went on to say how other colleagues worked well together to support each other to provide good care for people.

With the exception of the one mealtime experience we observed, as noted in the safe section of this report, we saw a number of positive interactions between people and staff. For example, we saw staff supporting a person to go outside to have a cigarette, staff chatting to people and offering reassurance when someone was anxious.
