During a routine inspection

We used different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. This was needed because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they could not all tell us their views. Those people we spoke with, said they were happy with the way they were looked after. One person said they “Liked it” in the home and another said ”The staff are lovely”.

One person told us they were “Confident” their relative was being “Looked after well”, they said "They know him really well, but if they were unsure they would ask us as he can’t tell them himself”. People told us that the staff never made them do anything they did not want to do and one said they suggest things but "We choose what we want do, they wouldn’t make me do anything".

The provider Countrywide Care Homes (2) Limited had documented policies and procedures for dealing with allegations of abuse, and these were linked to the local authority's policies.

Staff told us they were supported and given sufficient opportunities to maintain and develop their skills and were given supervision which helped them to feel competent and confident in carrying out their roles.

The manager was involved in maintaining standards both formally and informally on a day to day basis. The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service and the manager had also introduced additional checks which were specific to the needs of people living at St Michaels View.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. This was needed because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they could not all tell us their views.

Those people living in the home we spoke with, said that they were happy with the way they were looked after. One person told us that they 'Liked it' in the home and another said 'The girls are really nice'.

One person told us that they were confident that the person they were visiting was being looked after well, they said the person had been in the home for ten years and had become more poorly recently however they were happy with the way she was cared for, they said 'The staff treat her really nicely'.

People we spoke with when they were having their breakfast told us 'the food's lovely' and another said they 'Always liked the food'.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.

Those people living in the home we spoke with, said that they were happy with the service provided by the staff. One person told us that they had 'no problems' and that they 'look after me well'. another said that 'the girls are lovely'.

One visiting relative told us that they were confident that their family member was being looked after and another, when asked about the care being given to their relative, said 'she has been here for two years and she has always been happy'.

People we spoke with during the meal time told us 'the food's nice' and a visitor told us that her relative was 'always happy' with the food and that she had 'settled well' since she had moved into the home.
