Involving people to manage risks

Score: 3

During our site visit we observed people appeared happy and relaxed with the staff who supported them. Feedback from people’s relatives indicted people felt safe living at the home. One relative told us, “My loved one can't hold a conversation, so I rely on the carers to tell me what is happening, the home’s communication is second to none, they keep me updated on how my loved one is and send staff with them and they stay with them at the hospital.”

Staff told us they understood people’s risks and how to keep them safe. A staff member stated, “We strive to give opportunities to our service users so that they can maintain their independence , there is always something happening, and it’s great to see the smiles on the faces of those we support.”

People were involved in the management of risks. One person told us, “I have a green key like the Eddy Stobert truck for my tablet cupboard, staff check with me when I do it to make sure I have them and I make my bed, do dusting and hoovering all myself. Staff are here to keep me safe.”

There were systems in place for staff to report any concerns, incidents, and accidents on an electronic system. Risks to people were regularly reviewed so staff had access to current guidance. People had risk assessments in place for all of their care and support needs. Risks were managed using the least restrictive practices to ensure people were cared for safely whilst still maintaining their independence.
