Caring
People were supported to have choice and control over their care. Staff promoted independence while supporting people. Overall communication with people was effective.

Independence, choice and control
People and their relatives told us that staff were kind and caring. One person said, “Yes, they care for me…..they do their job, they don’t rush you.” A relative said, “[Staff] always have a chat with [person], the relationship is good between [person] and the carers." People and their relatives confirmed that they were able to make daily care decisions for themselves and make their choices and preferences known. One person said, “[Staff] always get my food right, they do my dinner nicely. They make me a cup of tea.” Relatives told us that staff encouraged people to be independent where possible. One relative said, “[Staff] have encouraged [person] to shave by their self. Now [person] always does it every day and cleans [their] teeth.” Another relative said, “[Staff] maintain independence by passing the flannel to [person] and ask them to wipe their face.”
Staff told us, they encouraged people to be independent and do what they could for themselves. This included washing, dressing and eating. One staff member said, “I try to encourage independence with personal care whenever possible.” Another staff member said, “I always try people to independent and do as much as they can.”
Care plans detailed people’s likes, dislikes and background information as to who the person is and what is important to them. People were supported to make day-to-day decisions about their lives. For example, what they wanted to eat and drink and what they wanted to wear. The service also encouraged and promoted people's independence, if appropriate.
