During an assessment under our new approach

Date of Assessment 28 May 2024 to 17 June 2024. London Care Lew Evans House is an extra care service. Extra care housing is purpose-built or adapted private accommodation in a shared site or building. People’s care and housing are provided under separate contractual agreements. CQC does not regulate premises used for extra care housing. At the time of our assessment there were 34 people using the service. People were protected from abuse or harm. Staff and the manager understood their roles in raising concerns. There were enough skilled and experienced staff in place to support people. People told us staff usually arrived on time and they were seen by the same care workers. Staff received suitable training and supervision to support them in their roles. There were safe recruitment practices in place. Risk assessments were in place to enable staff to support people safely. Staff knew people well and understood any possible risks. We found some areas for improvement in relation to detail of record keeping around some risks and audit checks to ensure they were effective tools. However, this had not impacted on people's care and the provider had already identified this and was working to improve these areas. People were involved in planning for possible risks. People were supported by staff who knew them well and treated them with care and consideration. We observed a positive culture among the staff team when we talked with them about how they supported people. Some improvements were underway to ensure people at the service kept their community links and reduce isolation. The branch manager agreed there was further work to complete in this area. Staff understood their roles and told us they were well supported. There were governance systems to manage the quality of the service. The provider sought feedback from people to consider for learning and improvements.

About the service

Lew Evans House is an extra care service which has 39 flats within one building. The service included a communal area for dining and a lounge area. At the time of our inspection there were 27 people using the service.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People told us they felt safe using the service and the provider had appropriate procedures in place to safeguard people from abuse. Risks to people’s health and safety were assessed and written plans were in place to help mitigate these. There were enough, suitably qualified and appropriately vetted staff working at the service to provide people with care. People were safely assisted to take their medicines. People were supported to keep their flats clean and communal areas were well maintained.

People were involved in the initial and ongoing assessment of their care needs. People received care from staff who were appropriately inducted, trained and supported to do their jobs. People were given the support they needed to meet their nutritional and healthcare needs.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People told us care workers were kind and we found care workers understood their needs. People were supported to be as independent as they wanted to be by care staff who respected their privacy and dignity.

People were supported to meet their recreational needs and the service held activities every weekday to support this. The provider had an appropriate complaints policy and procedure in place.

Staff morale among staff was good and people gave good feedback about the quality of the service. The provider understood and acted on their duty of candour responsibilities and sought people’s feedback in relation to service quality. The provider worked in partnership with other professionals when needed.
