We reviewed 2 quality statement under this key question: Independence, choice and control and workforce well-being and enablement. People’s choices were reflected in care plans. Staff were focused on ensuring that people were independent as possible, and people were encouraged by staff to maintain this. This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Treating people as individuals

Independence, choice and control
People were able to pursue their interests with staff support and believed they were given the freedom to do this. One person told us, “I am free to do all the activities I do each day.” Observations of people with limited verbal communication were observed making their plans for the day known and staff responded positively to this.
Staff provided examples of how people were supported to have choice and control over their care. Feedback also reflected the importance of family/friends contact and how people are supported to meet individual needs.
People confirmed that they were able to pursue their own interests with staff support and believed they were given the freedom to do this. Other people with limited verbal communication were observed making their plans for the day known and staff responded to this.
Staff completed values training as part of the induction and as part of ongoing training. Key workers were responsible for reviews of care plans ensuring people’s choices were reflected with regards to support. They also reflected those aspects of care where it was important for people to maintain their independence. For example, when taking a shower or eating their meals. Staff were focused on ensuring that people were independent as possible, and people were encouraged by staff to maintain their lifestyles.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement
Staff described how well-being was protected and promoted by the Leaders of the service. Staff told us the culture within the service was good’. Examples included support for new staff as part of the induction to help them settle into the role.
People were supported by staff who knew them well. Equality and diversity policies were in place to protect people (including staff) from the risk of discrimination. This ensured safe recruitment processes were in place and equality and diversity needs were known and understood.
