Our current view of the service

Requires improvement

Updated 21 June 2024

Chaston House Care Home is a care home for up to 11 older people. At the time of our inspection, 10 people were living at the service, although 1 person was in hospital. Our assessment started on 19 July 2024 and ended on 24 July 2024. We visited the service on the 23 July 2024. The rating at our last inspection was requires improvement (Published 28 June 2022). At the last inspection, we had identified breaches relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. We carried out this assessment to check whether the provider had made the required improvements. We found they had made some, but not enough, improvement. We found the provider was still breaching regulations relating to safe care and treatment and good governance. We will request an action plan from the provider to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety.

People's experience of the service

Updated 21 June 2024

To plan our assessment, we looked at information we held about the service. We also spoke with representatives from the local authority where the service is located. During the assessment, we met 9 people who lived at the home and a visiting relative. We also spoke with another relative and an external healthcare professional on the telephone. We observed how people were being cared for and supported. Our observations included the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. We met staff on duty who included the registered manager, deputy manager, two support workers and the chef. We looked at a range of records and the environment. The visit to the service was conducted by 2 inspectors and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. People told us they were happy at the service. They had good relationships with staff. The staff were kind, polite and knew people well. Staff were attentive and provided personalised activities. People were supported to stay healthy and eat well. However, systems for managing medicines were not always safe. The environment was not always well maintained and systems for managing infection prevention and control needed improvement. People's care plans and risk assessments were not detailed enough about their individual needs. There had been improvements to audits but these had not always identified where there were gaps in records or when improvements were needed. While the people we spoke to expressed that they were generally happy with their care, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
