During a themed inspection looking at Offender Healthcare
This inspection focused on the physical and mental health nursing services provided by Dorset University Foundation NHS Trust. Other aspects of the healthcare service were inspected by HMIP and their findings will be included in their report on the prison.
The provider worked with other service providers within the prison to ensure that people's health care needs were met. Visiting healthcare providers included dentists, opticians, podiatrists and specialist nurses. All services worked together at the healthcare centre to provide a seamless service.
Patients we spoke with were complimentary about the service they received. One person told us 'The nurses are brilliant and on the whole I think the service works well.'
Patients told us they were given information which allowed them to make choices about the treatment they received. One person said 'I feel fully involved in all decisions.'
Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust were commissioned to run the healthcare provision at the prison in April 2013. The provider may find it useful to note that staff told us that since the change in provider, on-going training was less accessible.
