All Inspections
31 July and 1 August 2013
During a routine inspection
On each occasion we spent time in the wards to observe the activity and interactions between staff and patients. We saw that staff were supportive, caring and professional. One patient told us: "The staff treat me with respect and observe my dignity. They always seem to know my needs, they are all very caring". Another patient told us: "I feel able to speak with staff about any concerns I might have, I have no complaints".
We looked at the care and support records of seven patients. We spoke with staff and they told us how they provided care for patients each day. One staff member told us: "Every day we discuss the risk that each patient may present. If we had concerns then the level of observations is increased so that we can keep patients as safe as possible".
Staff told us and we saw that patients were always consulted with regard to any treatments that may be necessary and whenever possible consent for the treatment was obtained.
Staff had a good knowledge of supporting patients where their behaviours may challenge and they and others may be at risk of harm. We had concerns in relation to the environmental restraints and controls that we saw in operation.
We had concerns with the environment of both wards and the suitability and safety of the premises.
We saw the hospital had an effective system for monitoring the quality of the service.
