Our view of the service

Ridgeway Residential Home provides personal care for up to 15 people over retirement age who may be living with dementia or may have a physical disability. It does not provide nursing care. At the time of this inspection there were 12 people living at the service. We looked at 3 key question areas (safe, caring and responsive) and 5 quality statements: safeguarding, involving people to manage risks, safe and effective staffing, independence, choice and control, and equity in experiences and outcomes. We met with all the people living at the service and spoke to 9 about their experience of this service. We spoke with one relative during our visit and had feedback from 2 others. We had feedback from 2 visiting health and social care professionals. We spoke to 6 staff members including the registered manager, the provider, and care ancillary staff during the site visit. We received written feedback from 3 other staff. We observed care and support in communal areas and reviewed 3 people’s care plans and 2 staff recruitment records, as well as general records for the service. These included staff training records, meeting records, policies and procedures and audits. We carried out our onsite inspection on 13 September 2024. Inspection activity started on 2 September 2024 and ended on 25 September 2024. The site visit was unannounced. The rating at our last inspection (published 11 January 2018) was good. The overall rating for this service remains good.

People's experience of this service

Not everyone was able to speak with us fully about their experience of the service, so we carried out observations throughout our visit. However, where able, people spoke positively about the care and support they received. People said they felt safe with staff. Comments included, “Staff are very kind… I like it here” and “They (staff) are kind to me and take care of me”. Relatives told us they felt their family members were well cared for and were also complimentary about how staff treated people. Comments included, “(Person) currently requires a lot of assistance from the care staff. (Person) tells us that all the staff are lovely and are doing their best to make them feel safe and well cared for” and, “(Person) is patently well cared for. (Person) is happy and we are relieved that so friendly a home became available when it was needed”. People were supported by enough staff who knew them well and understood their needs and preferences. People were relaxed and engaged with staff, who treated them with respect and kindness. Staff were visible and present and had time to sit with people and engage with them and support their chosen activity. People were given choice about their daily routines. Arrangements were in place to support people who may lack the capacity to make the decision for themselves.
