Our view of the service

Sutton Court is a 'care home' that provides care and support to people with a learning disability and autistic people. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. The service accommodates up to 10 people in one adapted building. We carried out an onsite assessment which included 2 site visit days on 8 and 10 October 2024 and off-site information gathering. Activity started on 8 October 2024 and ended on 30 October 2024. The management structure of the service comprises of a registered manager who has oversight of a number of the providers local services and a home manager who works closely with the registered manager and carries out the day-to-day management tasks and is based in the service. We looked at 5 key questions and 31 quality statements. At our last inspection in March 2022, the service was rated requires improvement. At this assessment, improvements had been made. Risks to people were now effectively managed. Accidents and incidents were recorded and investigated, meaning people were safe. Staff were recruited safely and received appropriate training. The general governance of the service had improved. As a result, the service has now been rated good overall. We have assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ (RS,RC,RC) guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. We found people were being supported in line with this guidance. People told us they felt safe and enjoyed their lives. There were systems in place where people had a range of opportunities to talk about how they felt and any changes they wanted to make.

People's experience of this service

People told us they felt safe at Sutton Court. People were involved in making day to day decisions in their lives and we observed this during our visits. The regard and respect shown by staff was valued by people. One person said, “She is good. She should be paid more.” There was a relaxed atmosphere and gentle banter. People were being supported to do things for themselves and told staff what they wanted to do and when they wanted to do it. Staff understood people and used different methods of communication to talk with people. There was positive use of Makaton (a type of sign language), and staff and people were enthusiastic about their learning around signing.
