Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last assessment we rated this key requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service treated people with empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. During our lunchtime observation we saw staff responded to people with kindness. For example, one staff member had noted a person had some food around their mouth. They fetched a serviette and gently wiped the person’s face to help ensure their dignity was maintained. The manager was also introducing a mealtime observation audit to check mealtimes were a positive experience for everyone.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

We did not look at Treating people as individuals during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Improvements had been made following our previous inspection. The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Relatives told us their loved ones were supported to make day to day decisions about their care. People were supported to undertake activities they enjoyed and maintain their independence. During our site visits people took part in activities which they appeared to enjoy. For example, on day 1 of our inspection, staff led a quiz for people and on day 2, people were being supported in small groups to prepare homemade pizzas. One person had expressed an interest in working in the kitchen and the manager was developing risk assessments with the person to enable them to work in the kitchen.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

We did not look at Responding to people’s immediate needs during this assessment. The score for this quality statement is based on the previous rating for Caring.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. The manager told us they were working to ensure a culture where staff felt free to approach them with concerns. Staff were positive about the support they received and felt they could share work and personal concerns with leaders. It was evident that staff’s feedback had been acted upon, for example a new fridge had been purchased for the staff room.
