Equity in experiences and outcomes

Score: 3

People were treated as individuals and their views sought and listened to. This was reflected in the feedback received from people and relatives. One family member said, “They take account of his culture. They supported last weekend with a family wedding for 2 days.” One family member felt that some individual needs for their relative had not been met previously but things were improving. They commented, “I don’t think they did in the past it has significantly improved in the last year because of focus on impact on Autism.”

Staff understood people had a right to be treated equally and fairly and to receive care and support that met their specific needs. One staff said, “People get person centred care. There is experience and knowledge available to give you different perspectives/approaches.” Staff received training in communication including Makaton and had access to a range of tools and support options to assist people with their individual communication needs. The registered manager and deputy manager were aware of respecting a diverse staff team and told us how they made adjustments for staff so that they experienced positive outcomes. This included a nominated member of staff to provide support for overseas workers.

The provider had policies and procedures in place relating to equality and diversity. The service complied with legal, equality and human rights requirements, including avoiding discrimination, having regard to the needs of people with different protected characteristics and making reasonable adjustments to support equity in experience and outcomes. Staff received training and had good knowledge of equality and diversity. The provider actively sought out the views of people to continuously improve the service, so they received regular feedback from people and their relatives. The service provided information to people in a way that they could easily read or understand with support. This helped them share their experience of care. People were encouraged to share their knowledge and become Makaton peer tutors. This not only enhanced their own independence but supported others to build on their own communication skills.
