Catering staff took pride in the quality of food prepared from fresh ingredients which looked appertising. Menu cards were prepared each day and staff visited people during the morning to discuss what they would like for lunch. People were complimentary of the food and told us, “The food is good enough, with plenty of choice” and “The chef is a wonderful woman, she makes food that I can eat”. Where people required modified diets these meals were prepared and looked appertising. Carpets in some areas of home were tired. This issue had been identified prior to the assessment visit and works were planned to upgrade flooring in these areas. There was an ongoing maintenance programme and communal spaces were the process of being update.

Staff respected people’s skills and knowledge and described how competitive group activities including bingo and scrabble could become. One recently recruited staff member told us, “The activities here are brilliant, there is a range of entertainment and tea parties, hairdressers and all that as well. There is a wide range of things available for the residents which I think is lovely.” Staff told us they were treated fairly and were complimentary of the support provided by managers during periods of ill health or personal challenge. They described how flexible and supportive their managers and colleagues had been.

The service employed 3 part time activities coordinators and there was a varied programme of entertainment and activities available. In addition, activities staff regularly spent time on an individual basis with people who were unable or unwilling to access the service communal spaces. People told us, “The staff help me to stay mobile and encourage me to go downstairs for activities” and “I’m bound to get lonely at times but the staff help me to stay mobile, and the hairdresser takes me to the salon in my chair”. People were enjoying the salon and chatting with the hairdresser during the site visit.
