Equity in experiences and outcomes
Staff and leaders did not always actively listen to information about people who are most likely to experience inequality in experience or outcomes. This meant people’s care was not always tailored in response to this. We asked people whether they felt there were any barriers to living the lives they wanted. One person said, “I like rugby and I have a big TV in my room. I’m excited when I go to rugby, usually every couple of weeks. I go out a lot, but it could be more.” Another person told us, “The service is a hell of a lot better by comparison with a year ago, but that doesn’t mean the service is good.” Relatives felt their family members were disadvantaged because of the lack of activities for people. Relatives also commented on difficulties with communicating with the home. Everyone living at Fethney’s were reliant on electric wheelchairs to mobilise. Staff supported people as needed to ensure they were not disadvantaged. For example, counselling had been planned for a person to attend a session outside the home. However, the venue was not accessible. It was suggested the counselling could be conducted online, but this had been discounted by staff since a face-to-face experience was needed. The management team were liaising with the counselling service. The provider endeavoured to make reasonable adjustments for people and had regard for people’s protected characteristics. Staff completed training on equality and diversity. The interim manager said, “The residents are very much involved in creating their care plans, involved in anything that goes in there, looking at their sexuality, their preferences, looking at religious, spiritual and cultural preferences. There is Pride Network organised by Leonard Cheshire which people can post stuff on. People celebrate Pride week with posters and badges.” Activity sheets had been completed for people to show what they had been doing, but these did not always reflect a planned activity programme.
