Maeres House is a purpose built care home which is located in a residential area of Widnes. The service can accommodate up to eight people with an acquired brain injury.  The people who live at Maeres House come from local authority areas across the Merseyside and Cheshire area of the North West. There were eight people living at Maeres House at the time of our inspection.

At the time of our inspection there was a registered manager in place. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to manage the service and shares the legal responsibility for meeting the requirements of the law with the provider.

We found that Maeres House provided a high level of personalised care to the people who lived there. The staff team was energetic, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the care they provided. They were supported by a well-led and committed management team. People felt that the staff team treated them with dignity and respect and enjoyed a good relationship with them.

Maeres House provided a good physical environment which was designed to meet the particular needs of the people who lived there.

We found the location to be meeting the requirements of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. People’s rights were therefore properly recognised, respected and promoted in this respect.

We spoke with three people who were living at Maeres House and they told us they were happy and well treated. Comments included; "Staff found out my needs before I came here"; "Staff talk to me about what I want" and "Staff treat me well." People told us that they were treated with respect by staff and other professionals who visited the home. They said they were able to live a life of their choice wherever possible.

Care plans showed that care and support had been based upon a needs led assessment by staff and in depth discussion with the person who used the service to identify their choices about support requirements. Staff told us that the overall goal was to maximise peoples potential and assist them to live a life of their choice.

From the staff records we looked at we were able to see that the staff received on-going training and support to enable them to carry out needs led care and treatment. Staff told us they felt valued and supported and that the management of the home was excellent.

Records showed that Maeres House had a variety of quality assurance systems available to assess the quality of the service it was providing to people. These included speaking with people who used the service and giving them the opportunity to make comments about how the services were delivered and make suggestions for any improvement for the future.

During a routine inspection

Due to the different ways that the people who lived at the home communicated we were not able to directly ask them all their views about their experiences. One of the people using the service who was able to tell us said that they were happy living in the home and that the staff were good.

We did observe good communication and understanding between the members of staff and the people who were receiving care and support from them. We also observed people being supported with their daily life activities.

The people we met with appeared relaxed, comfortable and at ease with the staff. It was evident staff had a good understanding of what was important to each person and how to support them.
