Independence, choice and control

People were supported to be as independent as possible. We saw that records showed that people were encouraged to do things including daily tasks and make their own choices. People and relatives told us that people were encouraged to make daily choices about their care and support and that staff respected their privacy, dignity and independence. People and their relatives told us communication was good, and there was regular contact with area managers and the manager. We saw examples of this, which included discussions around people's health appointments.

Staff understood what is meant by person-centred care and explained how it was important people had choice and control in their lives. Staff told us that care plans gave them the information that enabled them to support people to promote peoples independence, choice and have control over their life. Staff were knowledgeable about people's needs and said care plans were kept up to date and messaging systems ensured they did not miss important or new information. We saw that each person had a person-centred care plan and was developed with the person and/or their family and there were systems in place to keep the plan under regular review. The registered manager told us that if people's needs changed, or they needed a reassessment, that they or their area managers would visit the person promptly to ensure information was up to date, and ensure people were involved in the planning of their care.

People received care and support that was personalised and responsive to their individual needs and their care plans were kept under review to ensure staff continued to meet their changing needs. Systems and process in place ensured people’s care plans were person centred and contained information important to them. People were able to give continual feedback to the service.
