We reviewed 1 Quality Statement for this key question Our findings were - People were supported to see their friends and family without restrictions. People had support to live as independently as possible by staff who knew them well. People were active in their local community using different services and accessing local facilities. People were involved in their care planning and told us they had the support they wanted.

Independence, choice and control

People’s independence was promoted, and people were encouraged to do what they could for themselves. People were able to access their local community and use local services. Where needed staff gave personalised support. Staff had supported people to become independent with a stepped approach. For example, supporting 1 person to use the gym and gradually reducing staff support until they were able to use the gym on their own. People were able to have friends and family visit whenever they wished.

Staff told us they were aware of person-centred care and how it applied to everything they did at the service. Staff knew people well and understood their individual needs. Staff recognised people’s independence and respected their rights to privacy. The registered manager was very passionate about the care provided and worked consistently hard to make sure people had choice in all aspects of their lives.

Staff were key workers for people which meant they took responsibility for making sure care plans were personalised and up to date.
