Kindness, compassion and dignity
The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. We received examples of positive feedback about staff kindness. Staff had been very thoughtful about how they could make a difference to people. People told us, “They are very kind, know when I’m unhappy and make me smile again,” “one big family here,” and “They treat me with respect, I know I forget things but it’s never a problem, they help me look my best as well, they even do my nails for me.” One family member told us, “I visit regularly, they make me feel welcome and always update me on how my loved one is,” I have only seen staff being kind and respectful, they treat my relative in a lovely way, I have no complaints.” Staff told us, “We endeavour to create a caring environment, it’s what is important, we get to know our residents and treat them with respect and compassion, not all want to be here obviously, but we reassure and make sure they are comfortable.” Staff said that they use the care plans as a basis to get to know people as it records information about people and their interests, background, occupation, hobbies and preferences, this helps them to form connections with people and encourage them to chat and feel at home. Health professionals told us that staff know people well and are caring and kind. One said, “Staff are always respectful and kind to the residents, always prepared for our visit.” Another comment made was, “The staff seem knowledgeable and the plans of care detailed which is helpful.” We observed staff showing concern and compassion for people they were supporting. Staff were thoughtful and kind when assisting people at mealtimes and joined in with them to attend activities. They also ensured their clothing was in place as they moved or got up, in order to protect their dignity. We saw staff engaging with people positively.
