Independence, choice and control
People were being supported to have choice and control and make decisions about their care, treatment and wellbeing. One relative told us, “[Person] is very happy to be able to choose which staff carry out their personal care.” People also told us they were supported to maintain as much independence as possible. We received comments such as, “They always encourage [person] to use their good hand to eat, it’s a slow business but they are very patient and encouraging” and “[Family member] is very determined to get back their independence. I know they encourage them to get around on their own but are always vigilant, just in case. People also told us care staff helped them to stay in touch in with family members. One relative told us, “We have regular video calls with [family member] and the carer makes sure the screen is placed where they can use their peripheral vision.”
Staff demonstrated a good understanding of how to support people’s dignity and independence. They spoke positively about this being an essential part of their role. One member of staff told us, “I treat everyone as an individual. You get to know what people like do for themselves so I give them time to do that.”
There were processes in place to ensure people had choice and control of their care needs. Care plans contained information about how to support people whilst maintaining their dignity and independence when carrying personal care tasks. Each person had an ‘about me’ section which contained details about their background history and likes and dislikes. Care plans detailed people’s communication needs and instructed staff to ensure they maintained good communication with people at all times when delivering care.
