Safe procedures were in place to ensure people were protected from avoidable harm. There were enough staff who were skilled to provide care and support. Staff were well supported, appreciated and nurtured. Information about people’s needs was in place to ensure people were supported safely to live well at home. Safeguarding procedures were robust and there were various channels for people and staff to raise concerns. There was confidence in the management of the service, and they had created a culture of acceptance and family.

People told us they felt safe and happy with the care and support they received from Edith Healthcare Ringwood. People and their relatives knew who to contact should they have concerns and were confident in getting their issues resolved by the service. A relative told us, “Communication is great, they are friendly and approachable.” A person told us, “I can’t praise them highly enough, nothing is too much trouble, they are absolutely first class.”

Staff knew how to ensure people were protected from harm and abuse. They told us how they would raise concerns both within the service and outside. Staff were confident the registered manager and senior team would follow up any concerns and make the necessary referrals to the local authority as required. Staff understood how to ensure people’s rights were fully respected and had received training in safeguarding adults during their induction with regular reminders and updates. A member of staff told us, “The management are very attentive, caring and understanding they always try their best to ensure everyone is safe, staff as well, they always action any concerns straight away.”

Safeguarding procedures were underpinned by a robust policy and procedure. The registered manager was clear about the process to follow to ensure people were protected and concerns were reported to the local authority without delay. This included reporting events within the service to CQC as required.

Safe and effective staffing

People and their relatives told us they were happy with the staff who visited them. People spoke of staff with affection and told us they were kind and would do anything for them. They told us this helped them to feel safe and confident in their own home. A person told us, “The staff team are excellent, punctual, professional, I cannot fault them.” A relative said, “They [staff] are the best.”

Staff were complimentary about their colleagues and told us they worked well as a team. Support and guidance were in place and staff were happy in their role. Staff told us they received lots of support for them to carry out their role effectively, this was either in person or support via telephone. Staff training was ongoing, from initial induction and regular updates, staff were supported and encouraged to continually learn. A member of staff told us, “I did a detailed induction which was very clear. I felt supported when I started and completed shadow shifts with 3 clients first. The training has been excellent the staff are also very good and knowledgeable.”

Recruitment processes were in place; staff were recruited safely. Procedures were in place to ensure the required checks were carried out on staff before they commenced their employment. This included enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for adults. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the police national computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions. A programme of intensive training and support was in place to ensure staff not only learned how to carry out the role but understood the requirements of the service and the standards expected. Support was ongoing and there was a schedule of supervisions, spot checks and appraisals, records showed the conversations were two-way and detailed. Staff felt appreciated and were encouraged to develop within the service to expand their skills.
