Person-centred Care

Score: 3

People we spoke with told us they were involved in developing their care plans to ensure they received care aligned with their needs and wishes. A person we spoke with said, “I did all the paperwork when I first arrived here. We received mostly positive feedback about people’s wishes being respected. For example, a relative we spoke with said, “Staff always encourage [relative] to make their own choices and respect anything they say.” We received some mixed feedback about people’s preferred gender of staff not always being available, one person said occasionally they get a mixture when they are busy, but another person told us, they always get their preferred gender of staff. The management team were receptive and responsive to all our feedback during our assessment to address any issues highlighted to them.

Staff knew people well and had a good understanding of person-centred care. Staff told us they received a detailed induction which allowed them to read people’s care plans before providing support to people. Staff told us they mainly worked on the same units so they could provide a good continuity of care for people. The management team told us they had plans in place to improve on people’s whole experience, this included providing more meaningful activities aligned with people’s individual wishes. Staff told us care plans reviews took place to ensure care plans in place remained aligned with people’s needs.

During the inspection we observed all staff to treat people kindly and as individuals. We observed staff to use people’s names and ensure consent was gained before supporting them. We observed staff to support people to engage in activities. We found staff supported people to make choices of where they wanted to spend their time. Person-centred care was the only quality statement looked at during this assessment.
