Safe – this means we looked for evidence that people were protected from abuse and avoidable harm. At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good. This meant people were safe and protected from avoidable harm.

Learning culture

Score: 3

The registered manager had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice. The registered manager had introduced systems to continuously share and review learning from accident, incidents and safeguarding events. There was a structured approach to raise awareness and improve practice to keep people safe.

Safe environments

Score: 3

The registered manager detected and controlled potential risks in the care environment. They made sure equipment, facilities and technology supported the delivery of safe care. Regular maintenance checks were in place to ensure the environment was safe for people, this included Legionella testing. The registered manager had de-cluttered the service and added additional storage facilities. The environment was clean and there were improvements with redecoration and additions to make the service more dementia friendly, such as large faced clocks and murals on the walls. The registered manager was in the process of sourcing picture signage to help people navigate around the service.

Safe and effective staffing

The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs. People told us they were supported by staff who were kind and caring. One person said, “The staff are very kind, I get on well with all of them.” Another person said, “The staff are good at doing their job.” Staff we spoke with said they enjoyed working with people. One member of staff said, “I enjoy helping people and seeing them smile.” Another member of staff said, “We have high expectations of staff to look after people to a high standard.” Staff told us they had enough staff each shift to support people. Staff had regular meetings to discuss people’s care and supervision to discuss their development.

Infection prevention and control

The registered manager assessed and managed the risk of infection. They detected and controlled the risk of it spreading and shared concerns with appropriate agencies promptly. The service was clean and well maintained, audits of the environment identified any issues and these were now addressed promptly. A relative told us, “[person name] room is lovely and clean.” Staff had received training in infection prevention and control (IPC). There was access to personal protection equipment (PPE) around the service for staff to use.

Medicines optimisation

The registered manager made sure that medicines and treatments were safe and met people’s needs, capacities and preferences. Staff involved people in planning, including when changes happened. There were systems in place to manage the storage and return of medicines no longer needed. Audits of medicines gave the nurses good oversight to ensure people had their treatment safely. Medicines were linked to care plans to provide additional guidance to staff when needed. People told us they had their medicines on time and when they needed them.
