Within this key question, we looked at one quality statement relating to person-centred care. People were in control of their care and treatment. Additional support was available through enhanced care processes and provision. However, staff were not always aware of the communication aids they had access to, to support people with communication needs.

Person-centred Care

Patients and their relatives told us staff could not do enough for them. Even when they were visibly busy, people told us staff took time to talk to people on the wards and understand what patients needed. Patients told us staff responded to call bells quickly, even if to explain they would get there in a few minutes if already supporting someone else.

The division tailored care to meet local needs and collaborated with external organisations. For example, provision for reablement following hospital stay was targeted at people in the immediate area. Leaders explained the review process and prioritisation of the local area, so they could aim to meet the changing needs of the local population. Staff understood mixed sex accommodation standards, and there were no breaches. However, while some staff were unaware of specific communication aids, such as pictorial flashcards for example, further discussion revealed these were available but underutilised.

We observed enhanced care for a patient with additional needs. The care plan included the patient’s interests, and staff supported them in activities like walking, moving items, and socialising.
