People and staff worked as a team in their care. The home worked to ensure everyone was communicated with in the way they preferred. Barriers to communication were challenged and addressed. Equality and diversity were considered, and the principles embedded within the service. Feedback was requested and listened to in an informal way throughout the home. Improvements were continual dependent on what and how people wanted to live.

This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

People felt they could be their true, authentic self. Comfortable in the home, they were made to feel welcome. One person told us about living at Holmwood Rest Home and said, “I live how I want.”

There were robust policies and procedures in place at the home to ensure it operated in the correct way. Equality, diversity, and inclusivity were running through all procedures in the home.

Providing Information

Score: 3

People and their relatives told us they were confident their information was safe and secure. They felt involved and informed about changes within the home. Information was shared in a format that was accessible to people and shared as appropriate. Accessibility needs were recorded in people’s care plans.

The registered manager and staff had undertaken training in confidentiality and ensured sensitive information was handled and stored correctly. The registered manager told us they involved people and their loved ones in decisions and changes within the home, this was confirmed by them. Information was provided to people how they preferred, for example, in large print for a person who struggled with their eyesight.

Policies and procedures underpinned the ways of working within the home. Information was stored and shared in line with the policy. Holmwood Rest Home met the requirements as set out in the Accessible Information Standard. Since 2016 all organisations that provide publicly funded adult social care are legally required to follow the Accessible Information Standard. The Accessible Information Standard tells organisations what they have to do to help ensure people with a disability or sensory loss, and in some circumstances, their carers, get information in a way they can understand it. It also says that people should get the support they need in relation to communication.
