Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service had processes to ensure care plans reflected people’s independence and their individual choice and control. Care plans and risk assessments were regularly reviewed and updates as people’s needs changed. Records showed the service promoting and maintaining relationships with those who are important to people.

Staff told us, “We make sure they are doing what they want to do, when they want to do it”. Staff had a good knowledge of people’s individual abilities, needs and preferences, which helped to ensure they supported people in the manner they wished.

The service had recently implemented keyworkers, people who are important to the people using the service expressed how positive this change had been. One relative said, “They have recently put a keyworker in place who supports (persons name) to plan his week around what he wants to do. (person’s name) does what he wants when he wants, for example if he wants to go out rather than stay in, staff support him to do that”.

We observed, and records showed activities that were meaningful for the person were provided.
