People important to those living at the service said they felt the people were safe living at Brookland House. Staff knew how to raise concerns if there were incidents and accidents. Staff were happy in their role this led to a positive atmosphere. There were enough staff to support people. Staff had the training and knowledge they needed to support people. Staff knew people well and knew how to provide them with the support they needed. Care plans were clear and provided appropriate guidance to staff to keep people safe.

Safeguarding

Staff told us and records showed they had received safeguarding training.

Staff were supporting people to stay safe within their home. Relatives told us the service was safe. People were protected from the risk of abuse.

The atmosphere was calm and we observed staff speaking kindly and respectfully to people.

The provider had appropriate safeguarding policies and processes in place. Staff were provided with guidance on different types of abuse and how to raise concerns if these arose. There were systems in place to enable staff to report concerns should they arise.

Involving people to manage risks

People important to those living at the service told us, “The carers give everything to (Persons name), the staff really know the needs of (person’s name)”. Another said “(Managers name) keeps me well informed and explains everything that is going on in (person’s name) life”.

Staff knew people well and understood the risks to people. Staff knew how to monitor the risks to people and raise issues if people’s needs changed.

The atmosphere was calm and friendly. We observed there were positive interactions between staff and people.

People were supported by staff who had access to up-to-date guidance and knew how to provide people with support. Care plans and risk assessments were accurate and reflected people’s needs with essential information for staff to support people. The manager worked alongside staff to provide support and demonstrate best practice.

Safe and effective staffing

People living at the service were not easily able to share their experiences. One relative told us, “There are regular staff and (person name) has a keyworker, the staff are great, I have no concerns at all with the service”.

Staff told us, “We all work well together, we are happy to support each other, if I had any concerns I would be happy to raise them to (managers name)”.

There were enough staff to provide support to people, this was then reflected in the rota and observed in both the out-of-hours and the daytime assessment of the service.

Staff had the skills and knowledge they needed to provide safe support to people. Most staff had completed the training they needed to undertake their role. Staff were provided with regular supervision. Staff were recruited safely. The provider had a recruitment process in place which included DBS checks. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the Police National Computer.
