Feedback from people and relatives was positive in relation to how staff promoting people’s independence, choice and control, showing their caring nature and ability to promote a person-centred service. One person told us, “I have been here 3 weeks now and I feel that the staff are very caring and gentle. They support me if I need help, but they also allow me to do what I want. I can get up and go to bed when I want, not when they think I should.” A relative told us, "It was good to be able to personalise [relatives] room with pictures and ornaments.”

One member of staff told us, “I always try and treat the residents with respect. This is their home and I try to remember that when I am here.” Other comments from staff and management included, “We give people a choice in everything, food and drink, activities, washing and dressing. In the morning, we check if they are ok and want to get up, they [residents] will let you know if they want to sleep in.”

We observed staff were kind and caring and saw many examples of how staff promoted people’s choice and independence, including mobility. People were well groomed and dressed the way they wished. People were offered a choice of meals and refreshments, and time was taken to discuss the options prior to the lunch-time service. We saw people were given a choice as to whether they wished to join in with the range of activities available, and we observed a high level of interaction and enjoyment during these activities. There was a warm and inclusive atmosphere and relatives felt part of the service. People and relatives all looked comfortable and relaxed in each other’s company.
