The person said that the care staff were kind and compassionate and said, “They make me feel good about myself. I used to suffer with anxiety with care staff but don’t now. I had a bad experience with other care staff. They are very respectful."

One staff member said, “We must be very kind with them.” Another staff member said “I will treat them with kindness as I am the one caring for them… I need to give them the best care I can.” The Nominated individual told us about people, “We have to afford them enough time to listen to them, if they can’t communicate verbally, give them time.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

A person told us about their care staff “They help me to be independent with the things I can do.“ A relative said, “They’re patient with my [relative]’s needs” and told us staff listened to their relative, encouraged their independence and involved them in choices about their care.

Staff spoke about how they listened to the person they were caring for, treated them as an individual and ensured the person had control and was doing what they wanted to do. The Nominated Individual said about a person, “You involve them in everything, if they can do the smallest things, you involve them. The most important thing is to encourage them to do what they can do; include them such as walk them to the shop to choose food."

The care plan detailed people’s social interests and favourite activities. The service also encouraged and promoted people's independence, as appropriate.
